CRCNA Haitian Staff Safe

July 14, 2021

Currently, the situation in Haiti, where President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated last week, is relatively calm for Christian Reformed Church in North America personnel, although they say it is also a tense time calling for prayer.

"Please pray for wisdom as political leaders in Haiti manage this crisis,” said Ida Kaastra-Mutoigo, director of World Renew - Canada.

“Pray for church partners who are trying to be a source of encouragement and trying to provide essential food and supplies to people that are highest at risk. Pray also for peace and calm to prevail, especially in a context that is already affected by high rates of COVID-19 and gang violence/kidnapping."

A Resonate Global Mission representative recently reported that the situation remained fairly calm in the capital city of Port-au-Prince, where the assassintation took place, with some of the local staff being able to go out into the marketplace and traffic returning to normal levels in some parts of the city.

“The police are still sorting out all the players in the assassination of the president. They have said there were 28 Columbians and two Haitian Americans who acted as translators,” said the representative.

Currently, CRCNA staff are staying mostly at home and working virtually with their partners and in-country staff while monitoring the situation, said Kaastra-Mutoigo.
