Faith Story Starter Questions

Asking questions is a great way to help people tell their faith stories. Here are some discussion starters. They’re broken down into age groups, but many of these questions are appropriate for multiple age groups.

Questions for Children

  • Tell about a time when you felt like God was very close to you or your family.
  • If you could talk to someone in the Old Testament, who would it be, and why?
  • If you could talk with Jesus in person, what one question would you like to ask him?
  • Tell about a memory you have of a family meal or special celebration. How is your church community like a family? How is the Lord's Supper like a family meal?

Questions for Teens

  • What is your earliest memory of faith, either at church or at home? What does it mean to you?
  • Who was or is one of the most influential people in your faith life? Why?
  • Does your church have any special traditions that mean a lot to you? What are they?
  • Describe a time when you felt that God was very close to you.
  • If you could have one “faith superpower,” what would it be and why?
  • What does participating in the Lord’s Supper mean to you?
  • Name a worship song that deeply moves you, and describe why.

Questions for Adults

  • Can you identify different stages in the growth of your faith? What are they?
  • Tell about a “turning point” in your life and how God was involved.
  • Tell about a time when you felt that God’s will was being made very clear to you.
  • Is there a Scripture passage that has become a “life verse” for you? Why?
  • Have you ever read a book that changed the way you think about God and faith? Why was that book formative for you?
  • Identify a particular ministry/cause/justice issue that stirs your passions, and describe why.
  • What does participating in the Lord’s Supper mean to you?

Questions for the Elderly

  • If there was one thing you could tell your younger self about faith, what would it be?
  • Sometimes people think that older people “have it all together” where faith is concerned. What has God been teaching you lately?
  • Have you ever experienced something you would call a miracle?
  • What do you think heaven/the new earth will be like?
  • What does participating in the Lord’s Supper mean to you?
